Father Kastl

Father Kastl stopped in to visit and meet my homeroom students last Tuesday. He allowed students to ask him questions in order to get to know him better. We now know his favorite colors and food!!! Students asked him which hat he preferred from the selction of birthday hats in the classroom and he picked this one!

He said that way his hair could stay dry in the rain but still be seen by all! Oh yes, they even asked him what hair products he used! LOL!

Oklahoma State Song

Students will be tested over the Oklahoma state song on Wednesday. Students will have to sing or say the words to me semi-privately at my desk while others are working at their desks.

OPA!

Greek Week Sept.7th- Sept. 14th

The entire school will be learning about Greece during this time. The fourth graders have Greek study every Friday for the entire year, but during this week all students of Pius will be learning about Greece!! Opa!

The fourth graders will be performing a Greek play for the entire school on Wednesday September 14th at 2:00 in the gym. We will be having an all-school assembly at 2:00. A slide show of mine and Ms. Iten's trip to Greece this summer will be played, as well as some students demonstrating the official dance of Greece, and our Greek plays.

Wednesday is also dress as your favorite Greek character for all grades. Grades preK-3 will have a food tasting on Wednesday. On Thursday, grades 4-8 will be attending the Greek festival downtown!

Homework Pass!

Thank you for visiting the blogspot! I just wanted you to be aware that this blog can be a resource available to you. Please look at the various website links for math practice and other subjects. Pictures from time to time will be posted showing you your child at work! Be sure to sign the slip after viewing the blog so your child can earn a free homework pass.

I will try to have any upcoming events posted on here on Mondays to you can help your child prepare accordingly.

The links to Ms. Iten and Mrs.Fincher may be incoorect at this time but I am in this process of updating those!

Read about my trip to Greece if you haven't already! There are some typos but understand the conditions in which I was posting were not ideal and stressful at times. I plan to fix them as soon as possible.

Please sign your child's assignment book each night. Your signature states that you double checked with your child that all homework was completed and put in the red folder. You will only have to do this until conferences. After that they should be well trained and on their way to being organized. (LOL! If it were only that easy, huh!)

Spirit night was cancelled for Tuesday and there will not be spirit dress tomorrow.

Our class could use a basketball and a kickball for recess if you have any extra around the house!!

As we begin our first full week of school, students will begin testing their organizations skills as they try to keep track of all their papers and assignments. Every paper has a place! If a paper has a grade on it, its safe to say that they are done with it after you look at it. However, many wise 4th parents of the past have selected a box or a drawer to put these papers graded papers in for a couple of weeks to ensure that there is no longer any use for them.

The red folder has two sides: "Keep at home" and "Bring back to school". The graded papers and various other papers that are on "The keep at home" side are to be taken out each night BY THE STUDENT!! You will be blamed for many things, make sure it isn't cleaning out important papers from the red folder. Let your child hand you the papers they want taken out of their folder.
The "Bring back to school" side of the folder will have homework sheets and papers that require your signature and will need to be returned the following day.

Don't forget "Back To School Night" Monday, August 29 from 6-7:30. We will meet in Mrs. Fincher's room. Lots of information will be given on this night about the procedures for 4th grade. I look forward to meeting all the parents!

Athens- Monday

My trip is coming to an end. We arrived in Athens this morning and decided to go to the beach for a dip and some rays. I was determined to get into the beach at least once while I was here.

We took the bus and the tram to the beach and of course got off at the wrong stops but still managed to find our way home! I think I had Ms. Iten worried for a few moments but she stuck with me and we made it to our hotel unscathed! We are now true Greeks!

Our flight leaves Athens at noon (4am Tulsa time) and we fly to Canada and then Chicago. I will hopefully arrive without delays in Tulsa around 10ish!!! Can't wait to get home and see my husband and kids!!!!!

Santorini- Sunday PM

Santorini

We sailed for 5 hours to the island of Santorini. Santorini is said to be the most beautiful of all the islands. It was my favorite!!!!! The villages sits on top of the island.

We had to take a bus to the top and through some of the villages on a tour. That was like an amusement ride. At times I would look out the window and there was the drop off only a couple of inches away! The views were spectacular!

The island has a volcano that hasn’t been active for many years. Santorini used to be round but after the blast of the volcano it left the island in the shape of a crescent moon. The water that you see here used to be the middle of the island. Entire villages disappeared forever and is now buried 600 meters below the water.

This was our ship and right behind it on the tiny uninhabited island is the actual volcano.

I absolutely loved this little village and the house built into the side of the volcanic mountain! The views were some that we see in many movies.

Speaking of movies Angelina and Brad have a home on this island, but unlike Americans the Greeks don’t bother them or go gaga over them, so their house was not on our island tour! DANG!

There are over 500 churches on this island. Many of them have blue domes on them. There are many Catholic churches as well as Greek Orthodox. Many of the chapels are privately owned and used only once a year or for very special occasions.

When it was time to leave the island we ahd three choices.

1. Take the cable car down and wait in a line.

2. Ride a donkey down. Wahoo! We were told that was dangerous and that many people fall off the donkeys. Lol!

3. Walk down and jump over the piles of donkey dung! Obstacle course!

Can you guess which one Ms. Iten and I chose?

All I remember is waking up on the steps and seeing this donkey!!

This was our cruise hostess. She was from Australia and was a former teacher. A very patient person!

Crete- Sunday AM

Crete

This morning we awoke and were near the island of Crete. Crete is the largest of the islands. It is completely self-sufficient for all its resources! We entered through the large city of Herkalion. Very much like Athens it was crowded and dirty.

Today we were taking a tour of Crete on a bus. The bus quickly whisked us away to the outskirts to the farming areas. There were patches of fruit trees, vineyards, and olive trees. Here are some pictures of the landscapes.

We got to visit a winery and learn about the history of wine making in this area. Here is a picture of an old wine press from the early 1900’s.

Also on our tour we got to taste some olives, cheese pastries, and tea from the area. While at that restaurant there was a performance of some Crete dancers, I was able to tape some of the dancing to show my students. Here is a picture of the dancers. They are actually engaged to be married soon.

Ms. Iten and I joined in the dancing at the end and learned the national dance of the Crete island! Thank God it consisted of only 5 steps or I might have gotten kicked out of the circle!

This is a beautiful home in a small village in the countryside. I loved her patio and thought it was one of the prettiest. Many of the home owners had lemon trees and even grapevines growing ontheir patios.

It is tradition adn a part of culture that the men (and only men) go to the local coffee shop after working a few hours in their fields (5-9 am). The men sit around and talk and discuss the issues of the world. Ms. Iten had some of them pose with DOG! They loved it.

Patmos- Saturday PM

Patmos

After leaving Turkey we sailed for a 5 hours to Patmos. The sail was much smoother and I didn’t feel as bad. However, the Dramamine had made me extremely tired and I took a 2 hour nap when we returned from Turkey.

Patmos was a barren island. They have very little water and must have water shipped in daily. Homes have water collectors on their roofs to collect the rain water. The island is almost deserted in the winter months because of the lack of tourists. The islanders depend on tourism to fuel its economy.

St. John came here in 95 AD. He lived in a cave on the hill, saw the vision of the fire and brimstone and wrote the book of Revelation. The cave was very small but it was amazing to be standing there in the same place that St. John stood and slept.

A monastery is built around the cave today. Here is a picture of that monastery. Pictures were not allowed inside the cave.

The Monastery of St. John was also on this island. It was seperate from the cave. It was not on the excursions itinerary for the day, but we saw it from the street and took pictures of it.

Here are some octopus hanging outside a restaurant for display. I had some the other night but it did not have much flavor.

Some of the homes in Patmos date back to 1500. Above many of the doors are the dates the homes were built and a symbol.

This one was built in 1701 and there is a symbol to represent christianity above the door.

Here is a picture of an alley and some of the homes. There was a wedding earlier in the day and mrytle branches were thrown on the ground for the bride and groom to walk on as they left.

Patmos was my least favorite island so far. It was simple and quiet. Had it not been for the cave I would have been very disappointed!

Kusadasi- Saturday AM

Kusadasi

Today I visited my second continent, Asia. Our ship docked outside of Turkey and the city of Kusadasi. Today we will visit the home of the Virgin Mary and the ancient city of Ephesus.

The home of Mary was very tranquil and much bigger than I had imagined it in my mind. When archeologists found the foundation they had to use their knowledge to restore the house to what they believed it looked like.

I lit a candle here for the Pius community for all the love and support they have showed me for this trip.

Like all holy places in Greece, photographs were not allowed inside. I did take a picture of a picture of what it looked like inside to show my fourth graders.

This is wall of notes that people left behind for this holy place.

On a side note..... please be sure to let Maggie Elias know how much I loved her neck pillow. It came in handy and might have a little drool on it when I return it! JK

Ephesus

Ephesus is an ancient city that was built sometime before 2000 B.C. the earliest records that they have of this city is from the Amazons. It was a popular trading center in the middle of the ancient Ionian. St. John and St. Paul both lived here in this city. St. John died here and wrote the book of John from the New Testament. The ruins of Ephesus are in much better shape than those we saw in Greece.

Here is a picture of the library. It was amazing!

This was a bathing area for the men. It had little toilet seats that had running water below them that carried the wastes all the way to the ocean (8miles away) and a large bath in the very middle that was open at the ceiling.

This is the Great Theatre. It could hold about 25,000 people. Many famous singers like Elton John and Sting have had the fortune of performing in this ancient theatre. The acoustics were amazing.

Mykonos - Friday

On Friday we set sail from Athens to the island of Mykonos. It was about an 8 hour trip and we arrived around 6:00 pm. It was very windy and the boat ride was a tough one. I was feeling a little green and slept on the top deck in the wind. Down below was not a enjoyable place for me. I was happy to see the island of Mykonos.

Mykonos is a glitz island with beautiful white cubed-shaped buildings.

In the village there is a “Little Venice” which was actually influenced by the Ventians when they inhabitated the island many years ago. Here are some pictures of the buildings down the little alley ways.

As on many islands in Greece there are many chapels and churches. Here is one that sits near the shore. It was very small and was open. I went inside and lit a candle and said a prayer for my family.

Here is a famous church on the island the church of Paraportiani of 1425. It has five chapels inside of it.

The island is also known for its windmills. The windmills date back to the 16th century. They were 30 of them on the island used for grinding corn.

Ahhh…. the sunset on Mykonos was beautiful. I missed the beginning because I was talking to my family on the phone but I was able to catch the last few minutes of it.

After getting back on the boat I grabbed a quick bite of dinner and downed some Dramamine. I think Ms. Iten was a little tired of my moaning. I slept like a rock!

Little side note…… the water closets ( restrooms) in the monasteries were of Asian ascent. They are holes in the floor that you must squat over. I must say my Iron-casted bladder came in very handy here!! I should have taken a picture but I didn’t want to have anything to do with it. I ran away laughing!

Tomorrow we board our ship for the islands of Mykonos, Patmos, Crete, and Santorini. We will also make a brief stop in Kusadasi, Turkey to visit Ephesus. Not sure about the internet service on the ship so my blog may be lacking until Monday morning!

I have missed high speed internet (after spending 90 minutes uploading these pictures) and my cell phone. I’ve spent a small fortune in phone calls to my family which are a must for me. I have missed them very much!

Things are very expensive here in Greece and especially in Athens. A coke costs 3 euros or ($4.23) water $2-$3.50!!!! The average lunch is around $15. Once we got out of Athens it got a little better but not much. I am very thankful for all the people that helped fund our trip. I would have never been able to afford a trip like this for many years.

Here is a picture of the bus that I have spent many hours on for the last 5 days! It was very comfortable and smooth. Thank goodness! I just hope the cruise ship is just as comfortable and I don’t feel sea sick!

Going to go eat dinner now in Athens. Up early to board our small vessel to cruise the islands of Greece for the next 3 days!

Kalabaka

After a very restful night’s sleep in Kalabaka, we woke at 6:30 and prepared to visit the monasteries of the mountains of Pindos. Here is a picture of our pool and the beautiful view around our hotel. This was the nicest hotel we stayed in.

I had problems with the 24 hour internet service I paid for and did not receive the entire time I paid for, and they charged me $6 to use my calling card from my room, but I’m trying to leave that behind and enjoy what lies in front of me!!
Like these mountains made of sandstone!!! Look closely at the sides and you will see caves. Many years ago hermits would live in these caves.

The scenery around and up the mountainside was outstanding! We got off our bus at several different locations to take pictures.

We first visited the Monastery of Barlaam. This rock was first inhabited in 1350 AD. The beginning of this present building was built in 1518. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the church or the museum. The churches , St. John the Baptist and All Saints, did not have statues of saints like our Catholic churches at home. Being of Greek Orthodox, they wanted to get away from the idolatry of the Greeks past. So all the walls of the church are painted with biblical scenes and people. These paintings dated back to 1548!!

An Aussi friend, Ken, broke the rules and took a few pictures including one of me sitting in a wooden chair that the monks sit in when they are in the church. He is supposed to email me these pictures when he gets home. Just know I, Mrs. Oakley did not break any rules!!! The women had to wear long skirts and the men long pants. The skirt I am wearing here was provided to me at the ticket booth. It matched my shirt and everything!

This is a picture of the Abbott of this monastery. We were told he does not like to have his picture taken so I tried to be discrete about the picture. However, Ms. Iten and her charm got him to take a picture with her and DOG!! I got the heck out of there when I heard she was going to go ask him. But ask and you shall receive!!

This is a wine cask that was made in the 16th century. It was huge! Many monks fell off the side of the monasteries after emptying it so they never filled it back up! JUST KIDDING!! The monks would make wine and sell. It was in a small room and it was difficult getting a good picture.

Here is a picture of the Holy Trinity Monastery. It is the most difficult to reach. It has many steps down one side of a rock and up another. We did not visit it but stopped for pictures. This monastery was in the James Bond film “ For Your Eyes Only”.

The last monastery was of Saint Stephen. Only nuns and an Abbotess live here. Again we could not take pictures inside the church or museum and Ken decided to not press his luck with the nuns!

It is said that Saint John lived in these mountains as a hermit for a while.

Tour Guide and Bus Driver

This is our tour guide Eugina and bus driver Theodore. Eugina is awesome at her job. She is very knowledgable about her Greek history. After graduating from college she had to go to school for 3 years to become a tour guide.

Theodore can manuever that large bus (which I need to take a picture of) through the small streets in the villages and down the curvy mountain roads like a pro. I would not want his job for anything. Theodore is very quite and rarely talks. But he holds each of our hands as we step off the bus.

Delphi

Last night we spent the night in Delphi. The pool and view was beautiful. I took some pictures this morning to share with you. The camera of course does not do it any justice.

We rounded the corner a few minutes from our hotel to the site of the Sacred Way. This site is high in the Parnassos mountains and is the location of an oracle-shrine that began in 1600 B.C.. The Oracle is a spirit that lives in the area which people for thousands of years have come for answers to life.
Around 800 B.C. the worship of Apollo ( the God of harmony, music, and light) began and the shrine enjoyed great fame for 400 years. Many rulers and important person’s have come here as well as the local Greek’s and travelers from other countries.

This is Apollo’s temple.

There were secret entrances to the temple but the were labyrinths. Here I am at one of the entrances. They have been closed because they are dangerous now. Our guide said vipers like to hide in dark cool places.

I saw a drawing of what the site probably looked like then at it was incredible. As mentioned this was a shrine. Each region would have a shrine of statues and gifts that they brought and left for display for all to see.

Because of the location of this site it is referred to as the “navel” of the earth. This is a picture of the navel.

At the upper part of this site (and let me just say it was a hike!!!) there is another stadium where Olympic type games were held.

This site was famous and people from all over would come for music and theatre performance. There is also an arena for that.

The oracle was closed forever in 394 AD by Constantine the Great.

Delphi

For lunch today we drove back down the mountains to a coastal village called, Itea. We ate lunch at this place on the beach.

Our selections for lunch today included calamari, swordfish, snapper, cod, red haring, mussels, anchovies, and shrimp. They brought out these items on raw plates to show us. That’s what you see here.

Ms. Iten chose the snapper and I lived on the edge and ordered mussels in red sauce. I had never eaten mussels, NEVER!! It wasn’t too bad , but I’m not sure I would order it again.

This is a drink all Greeks drink, Ouzo. It has a licorice flavor and is very strong. Greeks sip it will eating metzes (or appetizers). I don't care for it very much. Water has been my drink of choice on this trip!!

After lunch Ms. Iten ventured into the ocean but only with much encouragement!!

Rio Bridge!

This is the Antiro bridge. It is the largest cable bridge in EUROPE!

It was an amazing site! It was completed in 2004 just in time for the 2004 Olympics. The Greeks are very proud of this bridge because it tis the first project that they completed ahead of schedule.

To pay for the $110 million bridge they had to make it a toll bridge. I will never complain about my pike pass bill again. It cost cars $12 to cross this bridge and our bus had to pay over $100!!!!

The Olympic torch was carried across this bridge one day before the 2004 Olympics. There was a huge celebration with fireworks and ceremonies. This is a statue to commerate that day with the Greek flag flying in the sky.

My feet finally got to touch the ocean today! It has been killing me to see the beautiful water and be so hot and not be close enough to get into it! There were some boats and a small harbor near one of our rest stops today. This little crab came out of the water next to me to say "Hi!"

This my friends is what I mean by winding mountain roads! We did a figure eight on the mountain side. This is on our way to Delphi. There is an aquaduct running down the mountain along the roadside. The views are amazing and our hotel tonight has a beautiful view. I swam in the pool after our long bus ride while looking up at the mountains. I just can't convey the beauty, you just have to see it for yourself!

GYROS!!

For lunch today I had my first gyro in Greece. And Bruce it is pronounced ( yee- ro) long e sound rolling the r long o sound. Hope you won the bet. It was made with pork and had a cucumber sauce. I must say it was good but “Jim’s Never on Sunday” is still better in Tulsa. (: To bad Jim doesn’t read my blog maybe I could get a free gyro!

Just know that if there are typos and missing words I'm typing the blog on the bus as we wind through the mountains and the internet is so slow it takes me an hour each night to download 10-15 pictures. But I am having fun sharing this experience with you!

Thanks to all my friends for keeping my kids busy each day! They don't seem to be missing me too terribly much yet, so you are doing an awesome job! And thanks to my husband for pulling the weight while I am gone as well. I am lucky to have such a great partner.

OLYMPIA!!!!

This morning we woke in the village of Olympia. Home of the original first Olympic games. As we walked through the Olympic grounds I was in awe of the buildings that were once there and the things they must have done on these grounds thousands of years ago.

According to legend the Olympic games began in honor of Zeus by his son Herkales. The games were neglected for many years until some time in 700 B.C. when Iphitos decided to institute the games and a Treaty of truce with thr rulers of Sparta and Pisa. When the athletes and spectators came together any war or disagreements could not be discussed or those involved would be killed. These games helped heal the bond among the Greeks throughout the land. The Olympic games took place every four years until 356 B.C. and the rule of Theodosis the Great.

Dang, do you feel like your in class and being lectued yet??
This is the temple of Zeus. It was built in 470-456 B.C.

Theodosis order the destruction of the temple of Zeus and the Olympic games were moved to Roman land. There was a statue of Zeus here that was once one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The statue was burned in Istanbul, Turkey many years later. This is a picture of the statue that was in the Museum.

The introduction Christianity and the disapproval of pageonism and idolatry delayed the Olympic games for many more years in Greece. It was not again until the 1800’s that the “modern” Olympics began.

The Olympic torch was lit at this site and is lit here every time the winter, summer, and special Olympics begins anywhere in the world. Believe it or not it was Hitler who demanded that the lighting of the torch in Greece be a ritual of the Olympic games when he hosted them in Germany.

This is the Temple of Hera (Zeus’s wife). It was constructed in the late 17th century.

This is the cryptoporticus or vaulted entrance to the stadium. Athletes and spectators would all enter through here.

Spectators would sit on the hillsides on the left and the right. The judges would sit in the stone box seen to the right and the only woman present at the games was a statue of Demeter on the left. Only the base that the statue rested on remains.

This is our Aussi friend, Murray, who was feeling the Olympian spirit and decided to run ( 3 times because his wife couldn’t work the video camera correctly) the Olympic field. He made us all smile!

Then Ms. Iten decided we should race! Hahahah! The picture shows her winning. However, that brings me to my next topic…..CHEATERS!

As athletes entered the stadium they would statues of Zeus to their right. These statues were purchased by former cheaters of the games. If an athlete cheated his city/state and he would have to pay for the marble and the artist to make a statue of Zeus. Then the statue would be labeled with the athlete’s name and which city/state he came from. Disgrace would be on display for years. There are 16 stone platforms that stuatues of Zeus sat on.

Guess Ms.Iten will have to hold another fundraiser to pay for her statue!!!

All through Greece you will see the little houses on the sides of the road. The are memorials for people who died in those spots. Inside the houses are relics from that person’s life and it marks a spot for loved ones to come remember their life and soul. I found that to be very touching and such a great idea.

Monday side notes!

Our bus ride from Mycenea to Olympia was 4 hours long. Ms. Iten and I got the long seat in the back of the bus and I layed down and took a nap for an hour. Some people heard snoring but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Whewww!

We wound up and down mountain after mountain on the bus. I was very surprised I didn’t get sick from the winding. Sitting in the back of the bus must have helped. We have told everyone that the back of the bus is not that comfortable so we can be sure to get that spot tomorrow!

It's 10:34 pm here and after spending an hour downloading all these pictures to the blog we are going to bed to get ready for another great day in Greece. We will be visiting the site of the very first Olympics thousands of years ago in Olympia. The stadium picture I showed you on Sunday was the site of the first Modern Olympics.

I mailed out postcards to the family today. Look for those in the mail. Hopefully they make it to you before I return.

Mycanea: Lions' Heads and Beehive Tomb

In Mycanea, we got to see the sites The Lion’s Heads and The Beehive Tomb. They were very close to each other.
The The Lion’s Head was the site of a settlement that is older than the Parthenon. This settlement is the first monumental site in Europe. The Arch seen her is the opening to this guarded village. The two lions at the top of the arch once had heads made of gold. But once again those heads were pillaged by the people over time. It once had large doors that could be barricaded from the inside to protect the people from wandering warriors and other dangers.

As you can see from this picture, it was quite a hike to the top. We only had 35 minutes to reach the top view the ruins and be back on the bus.

Inside these cyclopean walls, there was once a place to hold the grains, a burial place, a cistern, and several small homes. At the very top of the Lion’s head was once the royal headquarters. It had a magnificent view from up there.

This was the entrance to the cistern (well). I couldn’t believe it wasn’t blocked off so I went down. I was so happy that it was getting colder the farther down I went. I had to stop my cool descent when I could no longer see in front of me. I could smell the water but never saw the actual cistern. I knew I should have packed a flashlight!

The Beehive Tomb was the burial place of Atreus. A king of Greece in the 14th century. The king and his treasures were put on display after his death. It was not enclosed and did not have a door.

Inside the tomb there were blocks of conglomerate rock stacked in a circular pattern. Some say it looks like a honey comb and that is how it got its name. The king was placed facing the east and had a separate room for his treasures.

From 1400 A.D. to 1847 the tomb was left open and many people over the years removed items from the tomb. It was completely emptied by 1847. The tomb is left open and viewed by thousands every year.

I was starving so Ms. Iten and I got some homemade Italian Gelato. Haha! It looked good and there wasn’t a Greek version. Besides the Greek tour guide said it was good and to get some.

For lunch we ate lunch in the Mycanea. This is the typical Greek salad. It has feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and olives drizzled with olive oil and vinegar. Bread is usually served with all meals.

This is lamb and fritas. The lamb is seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, and lemon juice. Al of this is marinated over night. The lemon juice helps tenderize the meat and make the taste of the lamb not so strong. I have never cared for lamb very much, however I have enjoyed it while here.

This is a very typical Greek dish, mousaka. It is layered with potatoes, eggplant, ground beef, and cheeses. It was pretty good, too. To finish off the meal they gave us a plate of cherries which were grown right outside.

Beautiful village of Nafplion

We arrived in the small village of Nafplion at 10:30. It is the oldest settlement in Greece. It was absolutely beautiful. I would rather stay here than go back to Athens on Monday!!! When this village was built the people had great influence from the Italians which its buildings reflect. Nafplion has a castle built on peek of its Mountain top that is thousands of years old. There are 867 steps to the top. Ms Iten wasn’t up for making that trip and neither was I for that matter.

Out in the middle of the harbor of Nafplion is a small castle. This was built by the ruler of Nafpolian to house the murderers of the area. A few years ago it was turned into a hotel.

This was the first high school of Greece. It is now the present day Town Hall.

Across the street from Town Hall is the village school.

Olives and Oranges and Vineyards Oh My!!!

After leaving Corinth we drove through the Peloponnese mountains. Along the way we saw vineyards, olive orchards and orange orchards. It was a very scenic drive. Some of the best oranges in Greece come from this area.

I purchased some olive oil today from a little village that is known for the best olive oil in the country. I cant wait to get home and try some. I also bought some olives to share with friends when I get back.

Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal was constructed in 1880 by a Hungarian company. This same company constructed the Swiss Canal and began but did not finish the Panama Canal. It is 250 feet deep and only 80 feet wide. It was very intimidating to stand on the bridge and look over at the canal. The canal connects two seas together so that ships do not have to go around the Peloponnese Mountains.

There was a nice breeze on the canal bridge. Of course it was only 9:30 in the morning, but it was very welcomed. Yesterday was so hot!! I’m sure Ms. Iten was tired of hearing me say I was hot and stinky!

Today was Sunday and it had rained for 4 days straight before we got here. The Greeks aren’t used to so much rain and emotions are high due to their economy crashing! I swear all 5 million of them were on the beaches today. They needed to unwind and enjoy a little vitamin D. We drove along the coastline for almost 2 hours and it was endless with cars and people on the beaches. The protesting was supposed to begin after 6:00 pm (Yes, organized and scheduled protesting!) tonight so maybe they won’t be so cranky. Mom, if you are reading the news makes it looks worse than it actually is. I’m safe and having a great time.

ON A FUNNY NOTE: Ms. Iten and I blew a fuse in our hotel room last night while ironing, charging batteries for my camera, charging her phone, and charging my computer!! Darn Americans! However, it was only in our room and we didn’t have to call downstairs. I found the fuse box in the closet and reset it myself! Whew!

Tonight we went out with our tour group and had dinner. We sat with Jim and Mary from North Carolina. Mary is a travel agent and they just finished a 12 day cruise to Italy. We had fried calamari for dinner. It was very delicious!

Crazy Greek Drivers!

All of the cars in Athens are tiny! I could fit 2 or 3 of these cars inside my expedition. Parking is limited and these Greeks can parallel park with their eyes closed. They park on the grass and on the sidewalks. They block each other in. If you hear a honk you had better look up and see if its you that is about to get run over by these small “rollerskate-like” cars.

OBSERVATION: I haven’t seen one construction detour or barrier the entire time I’ve been here! And I spent 3 hours on a bus touring Athens today! I haven’t seen any wrecks either and these Greeks drive like their hair is on fire!! You should see the motorcyclists! They don’t stop for red lights if its clear and they weave between cars sometimes sharing the lane side by side with these small cars !!

The Temple of Zeus

This is the Temple of Zeus. It was built during the rule of Hadrian a Roman. Hadrian called it the temple of Jupiter (the Romans name for Zeus). There were over 100 columns when it was first built. There are only 16 columns remaining. The marble columns have been pillaged over the decades. Many churches and homes have pieces of Zeus’s temple in them. The site is now protected and untouchable by viewers.

This column fell after one of many earthquakes that take place in Greece.

This is the arch that Hadrian had built so he could walk under it to name and bless the temple he had built in Zeus’s honor. There is a beautiful garden like park built around this site and it is blocks away from the center of the city of Athens.

Athenian Agora

The Athenian Agora is the ruins of the once market place of Athens. It lies to the west side of the Acropolis. It was the “heart” of the city. The word “agoraphobia” comes from Agora.

This is the church of the Holy Apostles. It lies in the Agora ruins. It was constructed around 1000 A.D. It was surrounded by trees and I found it difficult to take one picture that showed the entire building. It was the best preserved building aside from the museum in the Agora ruins.

These are some statues outside the museum of Agora. We didn’t have time to go inside. I can only imagine what was inside if these were outside!

The Acropolis and Parthenon

The Acropolis means the upper part of the city where people would take refuge in case of an attack. After 2000 B.C. the people of Athens lived around it while the King lived on it.

The Parthenon was built on top of the Acropolis. This temple was to honor the goddess Athena. The most magnificent temple ever built to honor a god. The Greeks are constantly taking steps to preserve and protect what is left of the many temples in Greece. It is a very costly endeavor and is funded by many organizations outside of the country.

The Parthenon can be seen from many places within the city! It is a very busy site in Athens. Our tour guide says anyone who comes to Greece always comes to the Acropolis. There were hundreds of people there when we left at 10:30 am.

Airplane ride over Greece and Lunch

We arrived safely into Greece at 10 am (2am Tulsa time). We watched a little television on the plane, ate our dinner, and tried to catch a little sleep on the plane. I was able to sleep for a few hours before landing. Below are some pictures from the plane as we flew into Athens. The water is beautiful!!

There was a driver waiting for Ms. Iten and I to take us to our hotel in Athens. It was a 35 minute drive that we enjoyed while getting to see some of the city. The driver didn't use the air conditioner and played american music for us that kept cutting in and out. He was very polite and tried to communicate with us non-Greek speaking tourists!

Once we arrived to our hotel Ms. Iten and I ventured out to find a disposable cell phone for me and a place to eat. Never found a phone but found a great place to relax and eat. We ate at Ayiasi outside on the patio. In the shade the weather and temperature are perfect! The mosquitos like it, too! Reminder to self: wear bug spray tomorrow!

This is Chicken Souvlaki Agiazi. Similar to chicken kabob with onions, grilled tomato, and pita bread. Oh and those are Greek Fries!!! Not bad for the first Greek meal!!! I decided to pass on the octupus soaked in vinegar. ):

We were the only ones in the restuarant at 12:30. The owner told us all the Greeks were still sleeping. They do lunch around 2-3 and dinner around 10:30-12:30.

2 Days Until Greece!!

I have 4 days to prepare for my trip to Greece. Summer so far has been jammed pack with camp for the kids, Big Splash, Hope's 16th birthday festivities (3 days worth!!), and work at Brownies.
I'm excited of course, but beginning to get a little worried about traveling to a new country where I do not know the language and customs. I've been reading a lot of books to prepare myself for the trip. I will have almost 13 hours on the plane to do more reading!!

Today, I am trying to figure out what electronics I am taking and getting converters for them. The electrical outlets are different in Europe so my electronics won't plug into their outlets without this converter. My cell phone won't work in Greece either, so I have to find a disposable phone or phone card to use while I am there.

Oklahoma Auction Party

We had a great time last Wednesday at Discoveryland. Students had dinner at Brownies then we headed out to watch "Oklahoma" . It was a beautiful and cool night! The kids were well behaved and in good spirits from summer vacation. I received many compliments on how well behaved they were.

Upcoming Earth Science Test

This week we will continue to learn about changes to the earth's surface such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and erosion. The Earth Unit test will be next Tuesday, Sept. 21st . Look for a study guide coming home on Thursday, Sept. 16th. If students understand and can recall the information on the study guide they will be well prepared for the test. The test will consist of multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, and essay. Essay topics are noted on the study guide. We will be reviewing in class, but I strongly encourage students to study a little each night leading up to the test.

Ecosystems

Students are working on ecosystem projects in class this week. They will be showing the important aspects of an ecosystem in a poster of their selected ecosytem. We hope to dispaly our ecosystem posters in the hallway for vistors, faculty , and students to see.
Our Oxley Nature Field Trip will be Wednesady, April 7th. We will be taking hikes through 3 different ecosystems while there on our visit. Sudents will get to experience the ecosystems and its parts first hand. We are praying for a nice sunny day!

African American Reports

Students are working this week on their African American reports. We have been learning about the history of the southeast region and the struggles the African Americans have endured over the last 200 years. Students are now learning about African Americans who have made great contributions to our society and learning how all people despite their race and religion help make our country an amazing place. Students will be presenting short summaries of the famous american to the class next week.
Extra credit will be been given to anyone who makes a puppet of their famous american. I can't wait to see the creativity of our amazing fourth graders!

Multiplication Practice

Students are beginning to learn their multiplication facts in class. In order to get these facts memorized quickly, additional practice will be needed at home. Each week we will take a practice fact test that will allow me and you to see your child's progress and the need for extra practice.
For homework, I will assign practice facts for 15 minutes. Students can choose how they would like to practice. They can play a game on the internet, I have some links on this web page, or they can use their multiplication/division cards in their binders. These fact cards make students learn fact families so that multiplication and division are taught at the same time.
To ensure students are in fact practicing, I have asked them to get your signature stating that they have practiced. You can sign the assignment book or you can write it on a piece of paper. This will be a requirement 2-3 times a week. I appreciate your help in making sure this gets done.

Mt.Vernon's Colonial Musical Presentation

Students went to Hardestyl Library last Tuesday to attend a musical presentation put on my the Mt.Vernon Musical Ambassador program. Below are some of the students descriptions of the trip:

I learned that Mount Vernon is George Washington's house. I also learned that George Washington loved to dance. A German flute is harder to play than a regular flute. The German flute plays sideways and doesn't have a mouth piece. A harpsicord doesn't play high or low. I liked the field trip very much. - Chris

On today's field trip we learned about music from George Washington's time period. Back in the Civil War the soldiers used drums to communicate with each other. We learned about the guitar, the piano, the flute, and the drums they had back then. We got to hear recycled tunes and how the National Anthem got its tune. -Erin

I learned that guitars used to be smaller, had lace in the circle, and had ten strings. I also learned that Mt. Vernon was the name of George Washington's estate. They had a recorder they called the English flute. -Katie

The field trip was very interesting. They had played some of George Washington's favorite songs that were composed in his time. One of the songs they played was Yankee Doodle! We learned that a song had a lot of different versions. -Maggie

Pleasant Valley was a great experience today. Miss Margaret was our school marm and she taught us about the life of a pioneer student. Everyone"s costumes were impressive, and I think it will be something they remember for a long time. Be sure to ask your child about the trip and what they learned. I appreciate all the parents who took time out of their day to drive us to Stillwater.

Upcoming Science Test

Next Tuesday there will be a science test. Study Guides will go home on Thursday. While reviewing and studying with your child know that there is a website from the science book publisher that you can use as well. Look to the left and click on science under "Textbook Sites". When you go to the site click 4 for fourth grade and then click Unit D "The Atmosphere and Beyond". However, the test only covers Ch.10 material. Students can play games while reviewing terms and concepts. Just thought this may add a little spice to the everyday ritual of studying .

Check out the new link for spelling practice. This website allows students to enter in the weekly spelling words and play games and activities while practicing their spelling words for the week. Also, notice the link for the spelling lists. Mrs. Knox scanned the lists and made a link so the words are always made available to you from home.

President"s Speech

Students listened to President Obama's speech today before lunch. They were very attentive, and I think understood what the President was trying to convey to them. No class discussions were held in my class following the address, but know this is a great opportunity for parents to discuss what students heard from the president and what you as the parent want you child to take away form it.
Tomorrow students will get to experience in another important event in the history of the Unites States at Pius. A naturalization ceremony will take place and students will get to witness many people becoming U.S. citizens. Look at tomorrow's blog for details and pictures!

We are finishing up our rock unit this Friday with the Unit Test. I hope the study guide was helpful. Research shows that studying a few minutes (10-15) before bedtime is very beneficial. The informations floats around in the memory and is processed and stored faster and better. Studying a little each night is also better than cramming the night before! Have your child study a portion of the information on their own for a while, then quiz them over the material. Studying sections or parts and then adding on each day works best! Attached are some pictures of students investigating rocks and determining their properties during science class.

We are off to a great beginning for the school year! I am very impressed with this group of fourth graders. They are great listeners and workers. They are learning to stay organized and be responsible for remembering books and papers for homework.
